My top priorities are to address issues in our struggling schools by focusing on retaining and recruiting effective and experienced teachers and administrators. Ensuring student safety, both physically and emotionally, and minimizing distractions such as harassment and disciplinary problems is also a key focus. Additionally, I aim to improve fiduciary practices to ensure HCPS is properly allocating funds and paying bills on time.

I decided to run because I'm tired of sitting on the sidelines and being "quiet." I'm ready to be part of the solution and work towards improving our school community.

I do not support, but do support the two Board Members who did oppose this measure, the 1-mill tax for the various reasons:

  • While teachers deserve a salary step increase and salaries that are commensurate with national norms, I find that we have to search within the present budget and reprioritize the allocation of funds more appropriately.
  • Increasing property taxes, in the long-term, will eventually impact teachers/staff's wallets. Estimates presently state that property taxes would only increase $1 per $1000 value of the property, but no matter how small it’ll impact struggling teachers in the long term. Teachers are having difficulty buying their first home in these inflationary times and even with the recorded increase in rental prices, said to have increased 20% in the last few years, with increased property taxes rents will likely skyrocket even further.

For the most part, I’m uncomfortable with school closures, especially during a time of increased growth in our communities. Families should be provided the option of attending their neighborhood schools, especially elementary schools. Also, with the academic challenges and the heightened intensity of behaviors that some of our sites are experiencing it would be more advantageous to work within a setting having a smaller population of students. Increased emphasis on the needs, especially the academic deficits, would be a greater priority for the administration, faculty, and staff.

Several factors contribute to this issue:

  1. Lack of administrative support leads to poor teacher and administrator retention.
  2. Reallocating the best teachers to coaching positions, leaving less experienced teachers in classrooms.
  3. Loss of experienced administrators to other districts, leaving less experienced ones in their place.
  4. Increased behavioral issues detract from academic focus, especially with less experienced staff.

Not all Charter Schools are the same, and moving to one should not be done hastily. Parents should thoroughly review the school's charter, make unannounced campus visits, examine safety measures, and look at year-to-year academic results. They should understand how the school addresses specialized needs (e.g., LEP, ESE) and inquire about teacher credentials and history of service to ensure they know who will be teaching their child.
